It has been over 500 days and counting from Chelsea suffered a defeat in a WSL match. This fact by itself highlights the remarkable quality, and no matter how you present the statistics, they are daunting. Take such examples: “Sonia Bompastor is yet to lose a WSL game in 15 months in charge,” “Bompastor has won 23 of her 26 WSL games without defeat” or “The coach is unbeaten in 34 league games after arriving to England.” All are accurate, all sound commanding, and—after four victories out of four this season—there are no signs of easing up.
Eventually, Chelsea are bound to drop points in a WSL game. It might not be this week, maybe not in 2025, it might not even be during this campaign. Perhaps it will not occur during this parliament, but one day it is inevitable, and logic indicates that the matches where the unbeaten run has the highest probability of concluding are in their away games against their main title rivals, the Gunners, Manchester City, or Manchester United. This Friday, United among them will have their turn, and form-wise they have rarely been in a stronger position to attempt it.
Emma Hayes stated: ‘I don’t think managers are always thought about as human beings.’
Leading sides in the early-season standings face off in Leigh Sports Village in an evening match and, even though the WSL season is only four rounds old, Manchester United go into Friday’s fixture with the best defensive record in the league. Past encounters supports the visitors however, because perhaps the starkest statistic among them could be the following: United have not defeated Chelsea in the WSL.
In fact, they have managed just a single tie from their eleven past WSL meetings. Even so, the home team’s head coach, Skinner, wants his team to have faith. “It’s by far the most difficult test in the WSL right now, of course it is,” the manager commented. “We want to try to break that run on Friday but it’s difficult.
“They are a well-oiled unit. Possessing exceptional skill, squad depth and quality, that they’ve built through the years. I expect the most demanding of tests this week and we’ve got to be ready.
“In my view, you can hurt Chelsea with the ball, but you need to be brave to attempt it, because it’s higher risk since they’re really good in one-on-ones. You have to believe that you can defeat them, you have to demonstrate the opposition you are capable.”
For Bompastor, who led a clean sweep of trophies last term in her first season in the WSL, the statistics mean very little. “This story regarding the unbeaten run is mostly of interest to the journalists,” she stated. “Our season began this season from zero, with four matches all played, and we want to go into every game with the desire for victory. It is only the beginning, we did not achieve anything so far.”
The former Lyon coach recalls positively of playing at Leigh, because that was the place her team clinched last season’s title in late April, with a one-nil win thanks to a Lucy Bronze goal. Now they face a Manchester United side that has conceded only one goal in four matches and Bompastor noted: “They look strong and they have made a good start to the season.
“On such occasions, it’s always tough. Perhaps teams generate [fewer] chances than in other games and it is crucial to ensure your side is precise and effective. In my opinion that’s what makes the difference in the highest-level contests.”
The joint-leading goalscorers in the WSL this term will be in action for both teams: Manchester United’s Melvine Malard has four goals from four WSL games, just like Chelsea’s Aggie Beever-Jones, scoring in every game.
Bompastor said, regarding England’s striker's flourishing form: “From the beginning arrived at Chelsea, I could recognise that she is a highly skilled footballer boasting great ability, and additionally a well-rounded player.
“Defensively she has been outstanding; she is the initial player among forwards to apply the pressure. Offensively, we have been putting in effort alongside her, aiming for her to be as effective possible in many aspects of her game. Currently, she appears very self-assured [and] which benefits for the team.”
It is a cliche in football that the “early goal will be decisive” but this appears particularly relevant here; Manchester United have not lost in each of the past 25 WSL fixtures in which they scored the lead. If they can finally end their wait for a maiden victory against their rivals, it would be the first major turn in the WSL championship battle.
