Australian law enforcement have suspended the search for a four-year-old who has been disappeared in the remote area for almost several weeks, after additional operations proved unsuccessful to locate any evidence of the child.

Gus Lamont was spotted playing near his home on a secluded sheep station close to Yunta, about 300km from Adelaide, on 27 September.

His grandparent briefly departed for about a short period before checking on him, only to realize the child gone, prompting one of the biggest land and air operations in the region's records.

Latest Situation

Police - who do not believe wrongdoing - say they will persist looking into, but that the situation has become a "recovery mission".

Last week, authorities briefly scaled back the search, only to recommence it on recently alongside numerous defense members.

"Commissioner Grant Stevens said officials were searching a broader region based on new assessments from medical and search specialists, rather than any new information."

Mission Challenges

On recently, officials confirmed that the latest operation had not found any traces of Gus.

"The situation that the young boy is a small child, the terrain is extremely rough, unforgiving and affected by variable climate has made the operation demanding and more challenging for those engaged," police said in a statement.

About 470 square kilometers - an area approximately twice the area of urban center - has now been scanned, and a twelve-member unit established lately is projected to continue examining. Authorities have not excluded more searches of the area in the coming days.
