Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
The former director's legal representative filed the plea representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple reasons including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
Mr Comey was charged shortly after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they intended to present multiple petitions to terminate the legal matter before a court case, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to handle the proceedings.
James Comey's proceedings was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his probe into a different political adversary - the New York official - failed to file indictments.
James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration dismissed.
After listening to the judge state his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
The federal government allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the Senate by saying he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to news outlets details about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to influence, block and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.
Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and alleged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The accusations against the former director emerged after Donald Trump posted on online platforms demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and other people.
