The collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination shared the debut comprehensive teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie midweek. It was showcased in a special Nintendo Direct that centered on the upcoming animated film.
The follow-up to the 2023 blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this new installment will send Mario to the far corners of the galaxy. In his journey, he meets a fresh princess character and a formidable new rival in Bowser Jr., the son of the King of the Koopas.
Much like the games from the Wii period that provide its foundation, Mario will venture away from the cozy environment of the Mushroom Kingdom to explore outer space. On his epic voyage, he will reunite with some familiar faces, such as the Luma, a popular character from the first movie.
But it appears Mario and his brother Luigi will face a fresh enemy in the form of Bowser's furious offspring, who apparently commands metallic abilities. Worth mentioning, the preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not exclusively centered on visuals from the Galaxy games; it also contains hints to further iconic releases like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The film will see the return of the original voice cast, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
Joining the cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will voice Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to embody Bowser Jr. This was confirmed by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
The upcoming Mario film is set to release around the time of the four-decade milestone of the first Super Mario Bros. title. In addition to the movie, 2026 promises to be a significant year for Mario and his allies.
The company has a trio of new releases publicly declared for 2026, featuring Mario Tennis Fever, a version for Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a latest Yoshi adventure game titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially set to be released on April 3, 2026.
